How did you get to where you are today?
If you had asked me in high school about what I thought I'd be doing today, I wouldn't have been able to answer you. Never did I think that I would be working alongside some of today's biggest artists, let alone helping them grow their careers.
I started in the music industry as in intern at Island Def Jam (IDJ), where I worked with some amazing artists and learned lessons that I carry with me to this day. I learned how to be creative and how to to thrive under pressure. And I haven't looked back since.
Aside from my work in music, I started a project called The Valencia. My intention is to give back to communities through "shopping for a cause." That is, shopping with the knowledge that proceeds are donated to charity.
I didn't plan to be here when I was a freshman in college. But I know my confidence and resilience are what led me here.
What was your toughest obstacle and how did you overcome it?
Being a young female in a male-dominated industry has been a challenge, at times. But I have been able to overcome this fact because of 3 reasons: (1) I know I'm good at what I do, (2) I'm loyal and (3) I'm dedicated.
At the end of the day, these qualities surpass any negativity that comes with the territory.
What’s the key to staying focused & motivated?
The key is remembering why you are doing it to begin with, and reminding yourself of the big picture as well as the ultimate end goal. I don't think I've mastered this 100% just yet, as there is always room for improvement. But I'm making progress-- one of my goals is to be better than I was yesterday.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Time is the most valuable currency of your life, so spend it wisely! You can always get more money, but you can never get back time.
What advice do you have for someone who is looking to start a new venture?
Don't be afraid to try, even if you might fail. If you never try, you'll never know-- and you'll always wonder "what if." You can't live your life in "what if's." That's not really living.
How do we get more women leaders?
This is a personal goal that I really have been focused on lately: empowering women to pay it forward by mentoring the next generation.
We often fail to realize how impactful we can be to someone younger. Even 20 minutes over coffee can change someone's perspective for the better. I welcome anyone to reach out to me if they would like to pay it forward to the next generation.
