UCLA grads Lindsey Pallares & Vivian Nguyen are Co-Founders of Throw Like a GRL - their passion project which launched in February of 2017. TLG is a sports platform and online community that encourages every woman to find her place in the sports world. The platform also operates as daily sports news provider via an online newsletter. Lindsey and Vivian hope to see TLG grow into worldwide sports community and include contributions from women with diverse backgrounds in sports.
Lindsey is a bilingual sports reporter based in Green Bay. She is a Southern California native with a passion for telling sports stories. Lindsey began her sports broadcasting career in at KKCO/KJCT in Grand Junction, CO where she covered the Broncos all the way to their Super Bowl 50 victory.
Born and raised in the Bay Area (and a quick stint in LA), Vivian was a healthcare consultant in SF. After conquering both ends of California, she moved to New York to work in health tech sales. She's obsessed with information and passionate about making projects bigger and better.
How did you get to where you are today?
Lindsey was struggling to break into an on air position post-college. She was working at a local news station as a news assistant and was struggling with the fact that she wasn’t doing what she wanted to do. Her mom motivated her to think of business ventures. During a call with Viv, Lindsey said that women needed a sports platform to learn from and Viv was on board. An idea turned into a 2 hour drafting session over the phone. Ideas were bouncing off the walls, but three years later it was still just an idea. As it often does, life got in the way -- new job, new cities, different time zones made it difficult to start this endeavor.
So they sat on the idea for three years. Fast forward to the end of 2016 and Viv was feeling the same way Lindsey had. She decided this didn’t need to be just an idea anymore and could be a very real passion project for them. They pulled their resources together, researched, fought, discussed and few months later Throw Like a GRL was born.
What has been your toughest obstacle, so far, and how did you overcome it?
Hands down consistency. It’s easy for this project to take a backseat in our lives. On top of working our full time jobs, we are still very normal 20- something’s that want a personal life. To be honest, this is still a work in progress as we try to strike a good balance. Now that we’re both settling into our new cities and jobs, we’re starting to figure out our day to day life and where TLG fits into that.
What’s the key to staying focused & motivated?
The motivation is the excitement we’ve received from others. Our friends help us stay focused and motivated and keep us accountable. All the positive reactions - from women, specifically - really reinforce the need for this platform. It it helps that we love it, too.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
There are very few things you’re sure about in life, so for the things you are sure about - do them.
What advice do you have for another person who is looking to start a new venture?
No one is going to believe in you until you believe in yourself. If people believe there is no need for something, make them believe there is. This was an idea for three years because we didn’t want to commit the time or money because starting a new venture can be expensive and scary. What if it doesn’t work out? We hate to sound cliche but, put your money where your mouth is. Once we had skin in the game, it only motivated us even more. There was a lot of satisfaction in showing others our website - and people took us more seriously.
How do we get more women leaders?
We need more brave and courageous women to go into uncharted territory - whether it be in sports, tech, or whatever else they want. Often times that uncharted territory can be overwhelming and intimidating but that can seem less daunting when you have a mentor, friend, or community behind you. We create more women leaders by supporting one another and building each other up. And when you really think about it - that’s what TLG is all about.
